Mario Leoni, better known by his stage-name Marze, has been representing the Deep South in Aotearoa’s clubbing circuit for over a decade. Influenced by his big sister’s vinyl collection and her love of hip hop music, Marze has cemented a staunch scarfie following in Dunedin. Established residencies at former digs Di Lusso and Pop Bar, creating positive club vibes and solidifying his place amongst the NZ music underground supporting heavyweights Beau Jeffries and Max Dad E (Dudstown Recordings), DJ Shan and DJ Sirvere (S.A.S), P-Money, Raiza Biza, Scribe, Sidney Diamond, Smashproof, Dei Hamo, Savage, Devolo (Deceptikonz), Six60, SWIDT and Maseo (De La Soul).
His reputation for versatility and flair has consistently made Marze a major crowd pleaser in clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia. An introduction to indigenous artists while living in Melbourne started a journey of connection through culture, language and relatable storytelling. Networks developed into projects with Seeka, Gekkz, Adrian Eagle, and Bad Apples Music rappers Birdz, Philly, Nooky and Briggs. This taking Marze across Australia supporting A.B. Original, The Funkoars, Akala, Thundamentals, L-Fresh the Lion, Mathas, Joelistics and Coda Conduct. Marze playing his part at Spirit Festival, Naranafest, Yalukit Wilum Ngargee, End of the Line Festival, Big Chill Fest, BIG SOUND and Woodford Folk Festival.
As a co-founder of Leaky Hut Productions, Marze has brought his sound beyond the clubs and into the homes of his audience. Producing with childhood friend Munz, the pair had a vision to form a community of like-minded creatives. Marze helped to produce over 15 mixtapes, organise Hip Hop events and workshops aimed at providing youth the opportunity to learn all elements of Hip Hop culture and the relationship with his Māori heritage. Additionally, Marze has released eight mixtapes of his own. Fusing together the best of Hip-hop and House, the Drop the Beat series has proven to be a hotly anticipated component of Marze’s craft, and has facilitated the rise of the Electro Symphony Soundsystem collaboration with House DJ, Tim Sargeant and Mood [SPACEDJAM].
Commonly roaming at Toast Bar, Pequeño Lounge Bar, Sunset Sam’s and Carousel, Marze remains loyal to his networks across Australia and New Zealand.
